This is an old revision of the document!

FreeBSD has several source code repositories:

  • “base” is used for the system sources, including both Kernel and Userland. It uses Subversion.
  • “ports” repository contains the ports tree and related build infrastructure, it also use Subversion.
  • “doc” hosts all of our documentation and website, it also use Subversion.
  • There is an official mirror of the above on github.
  • Finally there is a Perforce repository, used for some experimental work by FreeBSD developers.

For SummerOfCode, students can choose to use either the Summer Of Code Subversion system, or can fork the FreeBSD repository on github. In the past we also had the FreeBSD Perforce system but it is being deprecated. It is likely that most students will opt for Subversion and this is the preferred option.

If you are unsure as to which to go for, please discuss with your mentor.
