revised_pkg_install

This is an old revision of the document!

Thanks to the generous help and understanding from Kirill (my mentor), my project has been extended from the end of this summer (the Google SoC project end date) to Q2 2008; guess that's what I get for overbooking myself with Intel work, but that's another can of worms I'd rather not get into. Primary Project Goals Mission Statement To increase package management throughput. Deliverables

Summary Description
Complete work started by [:AndrewTurner:Andrew Turner] with libpkg development.

Andrew Turner's work with libpkg provides an excellent starting point for a well-defined package installation structure, and Andrew even claimed on list that his infrastructure offered a two-fold to three-fold speed increase between his implemented pkg_install apps and the current pkg_install apps. That's why I will implement the remaining components that Andrew hasn't developed in his code (pkg_info, pkg_sign, pkg_version) and a sandbox. More information about libpkg can be found at: http://developer.berlios.de/projects/libpkg/.||

The end-goal is to improve a higher-speed structure with better buffering should be used to push performance marks higher, and Berkeley Database Structures offer that kind of speed. The target affected files will be the package metadata files (/var/db/pkg/*/*), and the ports index (/usr/ports/INDEX-*) files.

Secondary Project Goals

Summary Description
Document changes made to libpkg's code.
Document all tool changes with the revised pkg_install infrastructure. Self-explanatory.
Backport all changes to 6.x and 5.x for testing purposes and improved coverage.
